As a result of weight loss, pregnancy, breast feeding, or simply aging, women may find that their breasts lose shape, firmness or fullness. Breasts may settle at a low position and look hollow or emptied out in the upper portion of the breast. This can affect a woman’s self-image and confidence.
If you notice these changes in your breast and desire to restore the firmness and shape or your breast, a breast lift (mastopexy) may be right for you. If you have lost significant volume, the lift procedure can also be combined with the placement of a breast implant.
The most common procedure for breast lift involves three incisions; around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease. Through these incisions, the underlying breast tissue is reshaped and lifted, and excess skin is removed to compensate for the loss of elasticity. The areola is repositioned to a natural height and can be reduced in size if desired.
A lift will make the nipple appear higher on the breast mound, but will do little to change the shape of the breast. An implant will make the breast appear rounder and more full at the top, but make little change in the nipple position. Sometimes a combination of both surgeries is best to meet your individual goals. And, often, the decision to do one or both depends on your preference for creating an “idealized” breast shape. Implants alone will lift the nipple position slightly, but, to be more idealized, the nipple can also be lifted surgically. This depends on your preference, as some women prefer a more natural look with less scars, and others prefer the idealized look despite additional scars. Your desired outcome will be discussed during consultation to better understand the best surgery option for you.
While being a mother is one of the most gratifying jobs a woman will have in her life, it is also the hardest! Bearing children can have many effects on a woman’s body, and oftentimes these changes do not resolve with time. A “mommy makeover” aims to restore a woman’s confidence in her body. This can mean targeting many different areas, which may differ based on your body type and how childbearing has affected you personally. Common procedures performed in a mommy makeover consist of breast lift (sometimes in combination with augmentation), breast reduction, tummy tuck, and liposuction.
