Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a very popular and common procedure that can increase your breast size by one or more sizes. By surgically inserting breast implants beneath the breast tissue or the chest muscle during breast augmentation, women can achieve larger, shapelier breasts. This type of breast enhancement is sometimes performed in conjunction with a breast lift. Performing an augmentation along with a breast lift can create a breast that has more upper pole fullness, which is often desired. For some women, breast augmentation is a way to enhance self-image and self-confidence. For others, breast augmentation is part of breast reconstruction after surgery for breast cancer or other conditions affecting the breast.
Vectra 3d Simulation
We offer the latest technology in breast imaging to assist our patients with breast augmentation sizing. 3D Vectra simulates expected changes depending on implant choice specific to your body.
The two most common sites for scars are under the arm (transaxillary) or under the breast (inframammary). A periareolar approach is less often used, but carries slightly higher risk for change in nipple sensation and infection, so it is often not a first choice. The transaxillary and the inframammary approach are both excellent options. A transaxillary scar allows for breast augmentation without creating any scars on the breast, which is often highly desired. The scar in the armpit can often be hidden in a crease or fold in the skin, and becomes virtually unidentifiable as a scar over time. This approach is slightly more technically challenging, but easily accomplished by a plastic surgeon who specializes in this approach, as we do. The inframammary approach is less challenging, but leaves a scar at the bottom of the breast. Depending on your breast size, this scar can have variable visibility.
Implants vary in their shell, their fill material, and their shape. Each implant has pros and cons; there is not a “perfect” implant. It is our goal to find the implant that most satisfies your preferences. The Chicago Breast Center offers smooth and textured, silicone, and saline implants, in addition to more cohesive gel implants, including what is commonly called the "gummy bear" implant. The most common implants used are smooth round silicone implants. Smooth round silicone filled implants optimize comfort, longevity, and natural feel, and create a shape that is most commonly desired.
